Ice caves

Ice caves,explained.

Which caves you can visit, in which months, and what the tours really involve.

Two kinds of ice cave

Natural caves in Vatnajökull. The famous blue ones. Meltwater carves them in summer and they are safe to enter only once it freezes, roughly November to March. They are new every year, and the guide decides on the day whether the ice is safe. Tours meet in the Southeast, near Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell, about 4 h 46 min from Reykjavík by road.

Caves under Katla. Tours from the Vík area go into the ice at the edge of Mýrdalsjökull, the glacier over the Katla volcano. The ice is darker, often streaked with volcanic ash, and some operators run these outside midwinter too. Check the months below.

Months with open dates in each operator's booking calendar right now, starting this month. Operators open far-off dates late, so a gap can still fill.

Before you book

Gear. Tours provide the safety kit, usually a helmet and crampons. Bring warm layers, gloves and boots with ankle support, or check whether you can rent boots.

Fitness. It's a walk on uneven ice, not a climb. Minimum ages differ between operators.

Distance. The Vatnajökull caves are a long way from Reykjavík. Plan a night in the Southeast, or take a full-day tour and expect a long drive.

Cancellations. Wind, rain and warm spells close caves. A good operator cancels rather than takes a risk; check how refunds and rebooking work.

Good to know

When can you visit ice caves in Iceland?

The natural caves in Vatnajökull are a winter thing, roughly November to March. Some tours into the ice under Katla, near Vík, run in other months too.

Do I need experience?

No. Tours provide a helmet and crampons and keep the walking easy. Minimum ages and fitness notes differ by operator.

Can I visit an ice cave from Reykjavík?

Yes, as a long full-day tour, or more comfortably with a night in the South or Southeast.

Are ice caves safe?

Only with a guide who checks the ice that day. Caves change and collapse; never go in on your own.
